The Beacon Chain will conduct or coordinate the expanded network of shards and stakers. But it won't be like the Ethereum mainnet of today. It can't handle accounts or smart contracts.The Beacon Chain’s role will change over time but it’s a foundational component for the secure, sustainable and scalable Ethereum we’re working towards.
